About Us
In early 2007 we
conducted a survey to learn more about the Type 1 diabetes
organizations. The results indicated that there were no Type 1
diabetes non-profit organizations in the United States that were
effectively serving the interests of all Type 1 diabetics, including
children and adults. In addition, we could not locate a single
Type 1 diabetes non-profit in the United States that had an active
running team or that sponsored running events.
The Type 1
Diabetes Association was founded in 2007 by Jon Strishak, a Type 1
diabetic, and Reina Loyola to address the growing concerns of Type 1
diabetics of all ages that have gone unmet by existing
organizations.
The mission of the
Association is to improve the quality of life for those living with
type 1 diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the Type 1 Diabetes
Association seeks to raises awareness of Type 1 diabetes issues,
sponsors running events, and provides access to general resources
such as information and news, a list and rating system of diabetes
specialists, and a networking system whereby Type 1 diabetics can
connect with each other. The Association also encourages those
living with Type 1 diabetes to maintain a positive attitude, lead a
healthy lifestyle and to get involved in the community.
Personal note from
Jon Strishak, a Type 1 diabetic since the age of twelve:
